Training Workshop on Project Management with Mr. Lê Minh Hùng
On the weekend mornings of August 28-29, 2021, the UEH Institute of Innovation (UII) collaborated with Mr. Lê Minh Hùng to host a successful training workshop on project management. The event saw enthusiastic participation from over 60 members of startups within the UII Incubator community.
In every organizational activity, whether large or small, project management knowledge and skills are essential. This workshop aimed to introduce effective methods to turn project requirements into Achievable and Deliverable Objectives.
Participants learned how to form self-managed, cross-functional teams to plan and execute projects correctly, increasing the likelihood of success. Additionally, individuals gained knowledge and experience in optimizing skills, self-managing their tasks, and resolving conflicts more effectively to improve group performance.
The training workshop was honored to welcome Mr. Lê Minh Hùng, who has over 16 years of experience in project management, as the main speaker.
During the first session on Saturday morning, August 28, Mr. Hùng introduced the participants to the core principles of project management and outlined a 6-step process for planning and executing projects, using vivid and practical examples:
Step 1: Define the project
Step 2: Establish working methods
Step 3: Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), measurement, and planning
Step 4: Execution*
Step 5: Monitoring and controlling*
Step 6: Closing the project and lessons learned*
*briefly covered
Mr. Hùng emphasized, “The goal of a project is to bring about change in the organization and help it generate business value or facilitate the discovery of new business opportunities, leveraging existing strengths.”
Mr. Hùng stressed the importance of a broad understanding of project management: “A project manager must have knowledge across various areas, including project scope, planning (ensuring milestones are met), costs (setting and controlling limits), quality, resources (tools, equipment, people), communication, risk management, procurement, and stakeholder relationships. Once equipped with all this knowledge, integration skills are needed, much like the gears in a machine working together for smooth operation.”
Throughout the session, startups actively engaged by asking questions about essential qualities and skills for project managers, managing cross-functional teams, and structuring work in startup projects.
In response to one question, Mr. Hùng explained the PMI Talent Triangle: “To be a successful project manager, you need knowledge and skills in three key areas. First, you need project management expertise, including domain knowledge and some technical understanding to communicate with your team. Next is leadership ability, and finally, strategic and business management skills.”
The workshop also created a positive and collaborative environment, with UII staff and startup members actively sharing their insights, contributing to a relaxed and inspiring atmosphere despite the online format due to the pandemic.
The first session concluded with a practical "homework" assignment from Mr. Hùng for the startups to work on, and participants eagerly anticipated the continuation of the workshop the following day.
In the second session, Mr. Lê Minh Hùng summarized the key theoretical points from the previous day and addressed the expectations and questions submitted by participants beforehand.
The remainder of the session was devoted to reviewing the "homework" in an open and voluntary manner, with constructive feedback helping everyone better understand how to apply project management knowledge and skills to real-world tasks.
Though the workshop spanned just two mornings, it left a lasting impression on both the startups and the organizers.
UII extends its sincere thanks to Mr. Lê Minh Hùng for his dedicated preparation and the wealth of knowledge he shared. The enthusiastic participation of the startups in the UII Incubator community was also a crucial factor in the workshop's success.
This training not only provided startups with practical project management knowledge but also helped them develop flexible thinking, risk management skills, and team motivation strategies to achieve the best results.
