[UII Startup Activities] Workshop: First Aid Skills – Session 1: The Golden Standards in First Aid with SSVN
On Saturday morning, March 20, 2021, the UEH Institute of Innovation (UII), Survival Skills Vietnam (SSVN), and the UEH Volunteer Support Team co-organized a workshop titled “First Aid Skills” at V11, UEH Institute of Innovation. The workshop attracted a large number of participants from incubator projects and UEH students, providing them with essential real-world knowledge of basic first aid skills – vital for saving both oneself and others in emergency situations.
SSVN, which joined the UII Incubation Program in December 2020, is a social enterprise with a mission to minimize preventable casualties in Vietnam through international-standard first aid education. The workshop was honored to welcome Ms. Trang Jena Nguyen, Co-founder of SSVN, who was the lead expert sharing her knowledge that day. The session also received support from Dr. Trâm Anh from Binh Tan General Hospital.
The workshop provided accessible and practical first aid knowledge, and participants had the opportunity to witness live demonstrations by medical professionals.
The workshop began with a first aid knowledge quiz to assess participants’ current understanding and identify whether their knowledge was correct.
The first step in first aid is ensuring the safety of the rescuer by assessing the scene (scene safety). Participants learned to observe their surroundings, take at least three photographs for evidence, and call 115 to report the victim's condition.
To assess the victim’s condition, participants were taught to call out the victim's name, lightly tap, or apply slight pain stimuli, increasing intensity if the victim showed no response.
In cases where a victim faints and stops breathing, they learned how to perform CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation). The victim should be laid on a hard surface, and CPR must be performed immediately until normal breathing resumes. As brain death can occur within 4 minutes of the victim stopping breathing, knowing how to perform CPR is essential in emergency situations.
The workshop ended on a high note with an atmosphere of enthusiasm and excitement among the participants. The organizing team hopes that, after the workshop, attendees have gained a clearer understanding of the principles of first aid and how they can help reduce preventable injuries and fatalities. The team also aims to spread the importance of first aid awareness, as "the more people know how to perform first aid, the more lives can be saved." Stay tuned for Part 2 of the workshop, where participants will have the chance to practice more skills in greater depth!
